ABOUT THE SACRED MAYAN JOURNEY

What is the Sacred Mayan Journey?
It is a sacred ritual that the ancient Maya performed hundreds of years ago, paddling their canoes to Cozumel to worship the goddess Ixchel. The Sacred Mayan Journey recreates this part of Maya history through its rituals, dances, and ceremonies. Likewise, it follows the navigation routes of the ancient pilgrims and merchants.
What will be the route of the oarsmen and women this year?
In the 15th Sacred Mayan Journey, the starting point will be the Xcaret Park, where the canoeists will embark to paddle to Chankanaab in Cozumel and return to Xcaret on their canoes the next day.
On what days does TSM take place this year?
The Sacred Mayan Journey will take place on May 12th and 13th, 2023.
Which will be the activity program for the 15th Edition of the Sacred Mayan Journey?
Xcaret has been a timeless primary departure point for pilgrimages to Cozumel and is also the place where the Sacred Mayan Journey 2023 will start.
At dawn of May 12th, oarsmen and women will gather at the beach to cross the infinite blue towards Cozumel. They will arrive at the Chankanaab Park, where the islanders will perform ceremonial dances. At their return to Xcaret, will bear the message of Ixchel who tell them to keep sailing, the difficult times and pests have gone away, the Cosmos have been renewed.
At what time you recommend getting to Xcaret to say farewell to the oarsmen and women?
For the farewell of the oarsmen and women, we recommend you to arrive on May 12th between 4:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. It's better to get earlier.
Once the oarsmen and women have left for Cozumel, can I enjoy Xcaret Park for the rest of the day?

If your entrance was before 6:00 a.m., you might stay to enjoy Xcaret Park during its regular operating hours.

If you arrive after the departure, you must buy your admission ticket at a regular price. If you are from Quintana Roo, you can get a discount admission either online or at the ticket booths by presenting a valid official identification (INE, Passport, or FM2 or FM3) that proves your residence in the state of Quintana Roo.

If I am from another state of Mexico or a foreigner, how can I attend the event?
Purchase your ticket online or directly at the park’s ticket booths to attend the Sacred Mayan Journey ceremony. Remember, on the day of the event, Xcaret Park will open at 4:00 a.m.
Where can I park to say farewell to the pilgrims?
For the farewell of the oarsmen and women, there will be an assigned area in the parking lot at Xcaret Park. Upon arrival, the park staff will provide guidance.

ABOUT THE EVENTS IN COZUMEL

Where and when will the event be on Cozumel Island?
A welcome ceremony will take place at Chankanaab Park on May 12th. The next morning, the oarsmen and women will have a farewell at the same site.
At what days and schedules will these events take place?
On May 12th, the people will welcome the oarsmen and women around 1:00 p.m. Next morning, the farewell ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. We recommend you to arrive with enough time.
At what time can I arrive at Chankanaab Park for these events?
Chankanaab doors will open one hour before the events before the welcome event and the farewell ceremony the following morning on May 12th and 13th.
Where can I get the tickets for the Sacred Mayan Journey in Chankanaab for the events?
You can request the bracelets at the Fundación de Parques y Museos of Cozumel located at Av. Pedro Joaquín Coldwell 70 Col. Centro. Cozumel, Quintana Roo, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. You must present your official credential or valid official identification (INE, FM3, Passport) that proves you are from Cozumel. In the case of minors, it will be necessary to present a school ID or birth certificate. Tickets are given out for free and are limited to two per person. You can also buy them through the local media.
How can I get to Chankanaab?
By public transportation or taxi cab.
How can Quintana Roo residents attend the daytime events at Chankanaab?
You can request your free bracelet at the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel, presenting a valid official identification (INE, Passport, FM2, or FM3) that proves your residence in the state of Quintana Roo.

ABOUT THE OARSMEN AND WOMEN ARRIVAL TO XCARET

When will the final event take place at Xcaret?
The Sacred Mayan Journey concludes with the arrival of oarsmen and women at Xcaret around 1:00 p.m. on May 13th.
How and at what time can I enter Xcaret to receive the oarsmen and women?
To receive the oarsmen and women at Xcaret, you must arrive from 8:30 a.m. to present the ticket corresponding to the day of the event and show your valid official I.D. (INE, FM3, Passport), and pay the recovery fee. After 12:30 p.m. the ticket for the event at a recovery fee will not be valid anymore.
If I don't have a ticket, can I attend the oarsmen and women welcome event?
Yes, to attend the welcome ceremony, you will only have to buy your park’s admission for May 13th at a regular price. If you are from Quintana Roo, you can buy your ticket with a discount online or at the ticket booths, presenting a valid official identification (INE, FM3, Passport) that proves your residence in the state of Quintana Roo.
When and at what time will the oarsmen and women arrive at Xcaret?
Oarsmen and women’s arrival is expected around 1:00 p.m. on May 13th at Xcaret. We recommend you to arrive with enough time.
Where can I get tickets for the arrival of the oarsmen and women to Xcaret?
Tickets for the oarsmen and women’s arrival will be available on the main radio stations, local newspapers, and the Grupo Xcaret social media profiles; through contests or trivia allusive to the event on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and at the park’s ticket booths. Do I have to present any I.D. to collect the tickets?
Yes, you must present your INE, FM3, passport or any type of official I.D. from Quintana Roo. For minors, it will be necessary to present a valid school ID with photo or birth certificate.

IF A FAMILY MEMBER IS PARTICIPATING IN THE JOURNEY AND I WANT TO MEET THEM IN COZUMEL ON MAY 27, WHERE CAN I GET THE TICKETS?
If you are a relative of oarsmen or women, or someone in the cast, ask them to check with their coordinators for the logistics of how to get tickets.
Do I need to wear any special attire to attend the events?
We recommend you dress in white, wear comfortable shoes, and for events during the day, wear a hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun.
